Tuesday, May 20, 2008

The Luzhniki Stadium has been chosen by UEFA to host the first all English final in Champions League Final between Manchester United and Chelsea next Wednesday.

The stadium was renovated just for the final. It gets additional VIP zones in section C, the press-centre has been modernized, and new large video screens have already been ready to use.

The stadium’s official name is "Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium" and it’s located in Luzhniki, Moscow.

It is the largest sports stadium in Russia with total seating capacity is 84,745 seats, all covered.

The stadium is a part of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, and has been given a five-star rating by UEFA.

For your information, the Luzhniki Stadium is one of the few sports arenas in the world that offers the choice of playing games on artificial turf or natural grass, as it installed a FIFA-approved FieldTurf pitch in 2002.

Nevertheless, a temporary natural grass pitch will be installed for the final.

The Stadium was the main venue for the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics.

It also hosted the final game of the 1957 Ice Hockey World Championship between Sweden and the Soviet Union, attended by 55,000 spectators and setting a new world record at the time.

But the stadium witnessed the tragic Luzhniki disaster in 1982, where lots of fans were killed in a riot during the UEFA Cup match between Spartak Moscow and HFC Haarlem.

The official number of deaths is 66 but many people believe this number to be significantly higher but the tragedy covered up by the authorities.
