Thursday, July 31, 2008

Teenager Jose Baxter caught the eye as he scored a spectacular equaliser for Everton earned his side a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The 16-year-old, who had replaced Andy van der Meyde in the second half, skipped past Forest's defence and curled a 20 yard shot into the top corner of the net.

Evertonians were wondering if they had a new teen sensation to follow in Wayne Rooney's footsteps.

Baxter has represented Everton U18s and England U17s at the age of 14.

According to the academy director Ray Hall, Baxter is a much better than Rooney at the same age.

By the age of 15, he has broken Patrick Kluivert's youth goalscoring records at International youth level and Rooney's, Ian Rush's and Michael Owen's records at club youth level.

The prodigy is touted as the hottest prospect in the North West and has been tracked by Manchester United and Chelsea.

He also has secured himself with sponsorship from Nike, one of the youngest footballers to do so.

The Bootle-born striker attended Everton pre-season tour in Switzerland and made his first team debut in a friendly against FC Sion.

Despite scored a stunning goal against Forest, he also smashed the cross bar with a free-kick 30 yards out in Everton's previous pre-season game against Preston.

But the most interesting fact about Baxter is that he is actually a Liverpool fan!
