Serie A Preview: AC Milan v Inter Milan

Sunday, September 28, 2008

All eyes are on the Derby della Maddonina, the Inter Milan vs. AC Milan derby, which is in its centenary year.

Serie A leaders Inter Milan face struggling but recovering AC Milan in the 269th meetings between both clubs.

The cross-town Devils got off to a miserable start but having clinched two straight wins after defeats against Bologna and Genoa.

Carlo Ancelotti stresses that Milan must win the derby in order to remain in the hunt for the scudetto - they lag behind Inter on six points and it isn't even October yet.

But the Rossoneri are most likely without in-form striker Marco Borriello, who suffered a muscle injury in a 2-1 win at Reggina.

The former Genoa man joins Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Nesta, Philippe Senderos and Filippo Inzaghi in the sideline.

This situation could open up a starting spot for Andriy Shevchenko, who scored more times against Inter - 13 - than against any other team before moving to Chelsea in 2006.

However, Ancelotti may keep him on the bench, alongside Brazil superstar Ronaldinho, and move Kaká up front next to his compatriot Alexandre Pato, who has scored three goals in the last three matches.

On the other hand, Inter coach José Mourinho will be unable to play suspended Sulley Muntari and injured Luis Jiménez, Maxwell and Luis Figo respectively.

While in England, Mourinho was victorious in 22 of the 33 London derbies he took part in with Chelsea between 2004 and 2007, and he never lost to Arsenal - won 22, drew nine and only ever beaten twice.

The Derby della Madonnina hasn’t ended in a stalemate since the goalless draw in October 2004, followed by five Milan wins and four for Inter.

Final say, the Milan derby is a lot more than just stats. It's derby time!
