La Liga round-up: Barcelona rout Almeria

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Barcelona joined Valencia at the top of La Liga as the Catalans romped Almeria 5-0 at the Nou Camp.

Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring after just five minutes as he volleyed home a Carlos García clearance past goalkeeper Diego Alves.

Thierry Henry added a second on 13 minutes after the Frenchman was left unmarked in the box and turned in Lionel Messi's pass into goal.

Eto'o grabbed his second in the 21st minute before completed his treble three minutes later.

Almeria was reduced to 10 men in the 30th minute after striker Álvaro Negredo was dismissed for a dangerous lunge on Rafael Márquez, and Daniel Alves scored with a long-range free kick seven minutes later.

It was the Barça's second 5-0 win in five days following its rampage at Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The win moves Barcelona level on 19 points with Valencia atop of the table, although Pep Guardiola’s men have played a game more.

At Reyno de Navarro Stadium, Real Betis beat struggling Osasuna 2-0 thanks to goals from Mehmet Aurélio and Mariano Pavone.

Aurélio opened the scoring seven minutes after the break as the Turkey midfielder curled a delightful long-range free-kick into the bottom corner of the net.

Mariano Pavone added a close-range second with just five minutes remaining to lift Betis three points clear of the relegation zone.

The defeat leaves Osasuna remains without a win after eight league matches.
