Beckenbauer: Bayern must keep Schweini

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has said the club must make every effort to keep Bastian Schweinsteiger in Bavaria.

The Germany international's contract is due to expire at the end of the season and speculation is increasing with several major European clubs eager to sign him.

Beckenbauer, though, believes Bayern should do their utmost to tie down Schweinsteiger.

"Bayern must make every endeavour to keep him in Munich," Beckenbauer told German television channel Premiere.

"He is still young enough to play here for several years and then look to go and play abroad."

But Bayern team manager Uli Hoeneß has confirmed that the club will only make an offer which complied with their wage structure and wait for him to decide whether or not to accept.

Michael Ballack and Claudio Pizarro both left the club in similar circumstances.

"We don't want to go all out to keep hold of him but just work within our means," Hoeneß said.

"We will certainly not do anything irresponsible.

"We shall make him a decent offer and then he must decide whether he accepts it or not."

Spanish giants Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus are all reported to be keen on Schweinsteiger.
