Hargreaves out for rest of season

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves will miss the rest of the season after undergoing an operation on his right knee on Monday.

The injury-prone midfielder travelled to Colorado for a meeting with renowned surgeon Dr. Richard Steadman last week, and it was decided he would have a further operation after being plagued by a tendinitis problem for almost two years.

Hargrevaves has undergone an operation on his right knee and and will have a further operation on his left knee in a fortnight, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

The 27-year-old has been restricted to just three appearances this season and has not played since the 1-1 draw at Chelsea in September.

Last week, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Hargreaves had recently seen specialists in London and Sweden without being able to get the injury resolved, sparking fears his career might be in jeopardy.

Fergie said: "He has been carrying it for too long for us to hope that injections are just going to do the trick.

"Owen has come back for different games and then been out again and it is frustrating for the lad."

Those doubts will not go away until Hargreaves has returned to action on a full-time basis.

The England international has been plagued by injury problems during his Old Trafford career and has so far made just 17 Premier League starts for United since joining from Bayern Munich last year.
