Samuel Eto'o scored four times in the first half as Barcelona thumped Valladolid 6-0 at Camp Nou.

The Cameroon international opened his account in the 12th minute from Daniel Alves' through pass and doubled his tally on the half-hour mark after Thierry Henry's shot had been saved.

Eto'o completed his hat-trick two minutes before half-time before claimed his fourth less than a minute later after the ball had deflected off a Valladolid defender.

The hosts enjoyed the second half at a leisurely pace before Eidur Gudjohnsen, replacing injured Andrés Iniesta, lifted a delicate shot into the net on 71 minutes.

Eto'o received a rousing reception from supporters as he left the field in the 75th minute to be replaced by Alexander Hleb, who set up former Arsenal team-mate Henry with the chance to seal the emphatic win eight minutes later.

Barcelona now has 25 points from 10 matches, two points clear of second-placed and defending champion Real Madrid.

Gonzalo Higuaín had earlier scored four goals as the 10-man of Real Madrid defeated Málaga 4-3 at the Bernabeu.

Málaga took the lead after five minutes through Eliseu, but Higuaín leveled two minutes later, seizing on the rebound after Marcelo's shot had been saved.

Nabil Baha restored the visitors' lead in the 18th minute but once again Real pulled level, with Higuaín scoring from the penalty spot on 37 minutes after Weligton was penalised for handball.

The first half ended in controversial fashion, with Sergio Ramos shown a straight red card in the 44th minute following a bad tackle on Eliseu.

His dismissal had meant Bernd Schuster’s team had to play the entire second half a man light.

Schuster brought on right back Míchel Salgado in place of midfielder Wesley Sneijder to cover for Ramos in the second half.

Málaga were in front for a third time in the 70th minute as Apoño converted a penalty after Fernando Gago had fouled Duda.

But Higuaín, Madrid's top scorer this season, responded again with a stunning strike less than a minute later which completed his hat-trick.

Higuaín, who was replacing the injured Ruud van Nistelrooy, grabbed the winner on 78 minutes when he converted the rebound after Francesco Arnau had saved his initial penalty.
