Wayne Rooney 42

Wayne Rooney hit a 100th career goal to settle the Manchester derby as the defending champions were back in charge of their city.

The 150th derby was the first encounter between both clubs since Manchester City was bought by a wealthy Abu Dhabi United Group.

Manchester United dominated the first half at the City of Manchester Stadium and they grabbed the decisive goal three minutes before the break when Rooney tapped home the rebound after goalkeeper Joe Hart had parried out Michael Carrick's shot.

Mark Hughes' men battled to back on level terms and were given a helping hand on 68 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for a bizarre handball incident as he deliberately raising his hands to stop Rooney's corner.

The Portuguese claimed to have heard a whistle, but referee Howard Webb was not impressed.

Ronaldo had been booked in the first half for tripping Shaun Wright-Phillips, and he could have been easily sent off after that incident as, after being booked, he sarcastically applauded the referee.

The dismissal was Ronaldo's second in three visits to Eastlands - two seasons ago he was sent off for a lunge on Andy Cole.

Fortunately for him, United were strong enough to hold out with 10 men although City very nearly grabbed an undeserved share of the points.

In injury-time, Darren Fletcher’s clearance bounced off Vincent Kompany and rebounded to Richard Dunne and his effort was cleared off the line by Patrice Evra.

Yet from that, United were denied a second when Hart, who had raced up for the corner, sprint back to push away Rooney's 50-yard lob from going in.

Arsenal are back in the title race as they came from behind to stun Premier League leaders Chelsea 2-1 in the London derby at Stamford Bridge.

With the return of Emmanuel Adebayor after a lengthy injury absence and Robin van Persie finding his way back to form, this was a reinvigorated Gunners.

But it was Chelsea who took the lead when José Bosingwa fired in a low cross which was turned in at the near post by Johan Djourou on 30 minutes.

Arsenal were back on level terms in the 59th minute when Denilson played a through ball to van Persie who sent an unstoppable right-foot shot high into the net.

There was an element of controversy about the equaliser as van Persie looked two yards offside but the flag never came.

And three minutes later, van Persie fired Arsenal in front as the Dutch striker turned brilliantly and smashed a low drive between Frank Lampard's legs to move them up to fourth with 26 points.

Chelsea have only lost two Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge in four and a half years, but both have come under new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari in the space of just over a month — the other being against Liverpool.

And they has taken just one point at home against the other members of Premier League's so-called 'Big Four,' having also slipped up with a home draw against Manchester United.
