Diarra blow for Real

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

Real Madrid have been dealt another setback with the news that midfielder Mahamadou Diarra will be out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury.

The 27-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on Monday morning and he is now estimated to be out for between six to nine months.

Diarra initially sustained the injury while on international duty for Mali two months ago, but was able to for Real in the club's Copa del Rey first-leg clash against Real Unión on October 30, playing 70 minutes before being replaced by Wesley Sneijder.

A month later, however, the former Lyon man aggravated the injury in a league match, the club said.

The news is another cruel blow to Real, who are in fifth place in La Liga and have nearly half their team injured.

Three weeks ago striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was also ruled out for up to nine months after undergoing knee surgery, while Gabriel Heinze, Pepe, Sneijder, Miguel Torres and Rubén de la Red all missed Sunday's 4-3 defeat to Sevilla due to injury and health concerns.
