Aston Villa are back in the Champions League placings after a late 1-0 victory over Hull at the KC Stadium.

After pegging back Arsenal with a last-gasp equaliser on Boxing Day, Martin O'Neill's men did it again thanks to an own goal from Kamil Zayatte. In the last few weeks late goals have brought wins at West Ham and Everton.

However, Villa were far from convincing and also survived an injury-time incident when referee Steve Bennett changed his mind over a penalty decision against Ashley Young for handball.

Hull even had a goal disallowed within the first five minutes when Brad Friedel spilled a high ball under pressure from Nick Barmby and Nigel Reo-Coker turned the ball into his own net.

And there could have been another own goal for Villa when Curtis Davies threw himself at Ian Ashbee’s chip and the header sliced over the bar.

The only goal of the match came in 88th minute when Young crossed from the right and Kamil Zayatte, under pressure from Gabriel Agbonlahor, turned the ball past his own goalkeeper.

But Young’s most telling moment came in the dying seconds when he looked to have flicked Michael Turner's header with his hand. The ball bounced off the bar to safety but the referee pointed to the spot.

As Villa players protested, the official spoke to his linesman and correctly reversed his decision — to the fury of the home side.
