Tottenham climbed away from the bottom of the Premier League after a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth in a match which saw Spurs manager Harry Redknapp and striker Jermain Defoe play against their former club for the first time.

Redknapp, who was left Pompey for Spurs 84 days before this match, and Defoe were booed by away fans, while Pompey skipper Sol Campbell was jeered with his every touch from the Spurs fans who have never forgiven him for joining rivals bitter Arsenal in 2001.

David Nugent, after squandering a good chance in the first-half, gave Portsmouth the lead on 59 minutes after Pompey goalkeeper David James had made an outstanding save at the other end of the field.

Aaron Lennon's shot took a big deflection but James managed to change direction and save at the foot of the post before the ball was swept up field and broke to Nugent who struck a shot from 20 yards to score his first Premier League goal 18 months after joining the club.

But Defoe came back to haunt his former club in the 70th minute when he started and finished a move by shooting through Campbell's legs and past James.

Substitute Darren Bent should have added a second in the 79th minute but while it was harder to put it wide than hit the target from four yards, he nodded past the post.

Elsewhere, West Ham beat Fulham 3-1 to end the Cottagers' nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
