David James celebrated his record-breaking Premier League appearance with a clean sheet as Portsmouth earned a comfortable 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Fratton Park.

The 38-year-old goalkeepper overtook Gary Speed's previous mark with a 536th top flight appearance.

Portsmouth enjoyed the possession and Peter Crouch was close to opening the scoring, but lost out to Vincent Kompany when one touch would have deflected Niko Kranjčar’s whipped cross goalwards.

Seven minutes into the second half, Shay Given kept out a low shot from Glen Johnson after the right-back neatly turned Nigel de Jong inside the City area.

David Nugent fluffed his shot when one-on-one with Given on 54 minutes as chances kept piling up for the hosts.

The breakthrough came on 70 minutes when Johnson broke down the right and forced Given into a superb stop, but the England defender collected the rebound and dispatched it coolly into the top corner.

Five minutes later, Hermann Hreidarsson sealed the much needed victory as he powered home a Jermaine Pennant corner.

And Johnson nearly capped a remarkable display with a second goal almost identical to his first, only to see his effort cleared off the line with two minutes to play.
