Solskjær turns down Norway job

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Manchester United reserve team coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær has revealed he turned down the chance of taking charge of the Norway national side to stick with the Red Devils.

Solskjær's homeland came calling as they looked to find a replacement for Åge Hareide, who stepped down from the post in December after the team failed to win a single match in 2008.

The former striker - formerly known as The Baby-Faced Assassin - was approached by the Norwegian Football Federation soon after Hareide's departure, but turned it down because of his respect for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson meant he couldn't leave his current position.

"I respect my boss (Ferguson) so much that I'm not leaving right away," the 38-year-old told the Norwegian TV-2 network.

"But it was difficult to say no. The biggest job you can get is as Norway coach, but at this point in time it's not for me - although obviously it was an honour to be asked.

"I'm working at Manchester United and my coaching career is on the right path. It would have been exciting to take a much bigger job than the one I have, but right now I've agreed to do the job I have at United."
