Liverpool closed to within four points of leaders Manchester United following a 2-0 home victory over Sunderland.

Sunderland should have been ahead after just four minutes when Kenwyne Jones ran clear after Martin Å krtel's slip, but Pepe Reina stood tall and dived low to his right to save.

Reina's counterpart Márton Fülöp then produced an outstanding save to turn Albert Riera’s low drive behind from the foot of the post, after it took a wicked deflection off Grant Leadbitter.

Liverpool took the lead in the 52nd minute as Riera sent over a cross from the byline that Steven Gerrard headed back for the unmarked David N'Gog to fire home his first league goal for the club.

After 62 minutes Sunderland brought on Djibril Cissé for Leadbitter, with the former Liverpool man getting a rousing reception from the Anfield crowd.

Three minutes later Liverpool got their second as Yossi Benayoun side-footed the loose ball after Fülöp had horribly spilled an N'Gog cross-shot.

Didier Drogba 79

Didier Drogba scored the lone goal in Chelsea's 1-0 victory at Portsmouth as the Blues closed the gap on leaders Manchester United.

The match was being played in awful conditions with rain sweeping down onto the Fratton Park playing surface, making it extremely slippery.

Chelsea should have taken the lead in the 16th minute Drogba flung himself at a drilled cross from Ashley Cole but missed it by inches at the far post.

The Blues had goalkeeper Petr ÄŒech to thank for keeping the scoreline level in the 28th minute when he denied a powerful low drive from Sean Davis with a cracking one-handed save.

The Czech Republic goalkeeper then made another crucial save on 59 minutes when he denied David Nugent after the striker unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the box having turned John Terry in style.

Chelsea finally broke through on 79 minutes when Drogba fired a low right-footed shot into the far corner after Portsmouth had failed to clear a José Bosingwa cross.

Elsewhere, Nicklas Bendtner ended Arsenal's four league games without a goal as they swept aside struggling West Brom 3-1 at the Hawthorns.
