Inter Milan pulled seven points clear at the top of Serie A with a 2-0 win over Fiorentina at the San Siro.

The hosts went ahead in dubious fashion on 11 minutes when Zlatan Ibrahimović nodded home from close range. The giant Swede went in dangerously with a high boot on Fiorentina goalkeeper Sébastien Frey as they both challenged for Mario Balotelli's free-kick and Ibrahimović was fortunate to nod in the loose ball.

Fiorentina then besieged the Inter goal but Júlio César stood firm to thwart the visitors' many advances. He rushed off his line again to smother at Alberto Gilardino's feet before tipping an instinctive shot from the Viola striker over the crossbar.

However, Dejan Stanković came close to increase Inter's lead when his angled drive from the edge of the box skimmed the far post.

Ibrahimović then ended any lingering Viola hopes of a leveler with an unstoppable, thunderous free-kick from over 25 yards out which was clocked at 109km/h.

AC Milan remain in third in the Serie A standings after thumping their hosts Siena 5-1.

It took the Rossoneri just seven minutes to open the scoring as Andrea Pirlo coolly converted the penalty after Houssine Kharja clumsily clattered into Mathieu Flamini on the edge of the area.

Moments later Milan were dealt a blow as goalkeeper Christian Abbiati had to come off following a collision with defender Giuseppe Favalli. Dida came off the bench for his Serie A debut this season.

The visitors went into the break 2-0 up, as Filippo Inzaghi turned home a David Beckham corner on the stroke of half-time.

After the break Emanuele Calaio' put the ball in the back of the net, but was correctly ruled out for offside.

Alexandre Pato made it three for Milan 10 minutes into the second half with an unstoppable rocket from almost 30 yards which left Gianluca Curci well beaten.

Siena pulled one back two minutes after the hour mark when Massimo Maccarone fired a low shot into the right corner from the just outside the area.

However, any hopes of a Bianconeri comeback were dashed as Pirlo played a lovely ball through to Inzaghi who fired home his 300th career goal in the 71st minute.

Pato scored Milan's fifth on 80 minutes as he latched onto a great long pass from Ronaldinho before rounding Curci to slot into an empty net.
