Germany strengthened their position at the top of Group 4 with a comfortable 4-0 home success over Liechtenstein.

Captain Michael Ballack opened the scoring for the Germans after just four minutes with a stunning a volley following a cross from Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Marcell Jansen doubled the lead five minutes later as he prodded home the rebound after Liechtenstein goalkeeper Peter Jehle had parried Lukas Podolski's shot.

Germany made it three early in the second half when Schweinsteiger slotted into an empty goal after Jehle blocked another Podolski's shot.

And Podolski finally got his name on the scorescheet as he fired home from nine yards to complete the scoring on 50 minutes.

The home side dominated the rest of the contest but were unable to convert a number of chances to extend their lead.
