Brawl breaks out in Istanbul derby

Monday, April 13, 2009

Players from Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe fought each other in the final minute their tense derby match that ended in a 0-0 draw at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on Sunday.

Matches between the two of Istanbul's biggest teams are usually tense, but last Sunday both sides needed to win in order to remain in the race for Turkey's Super Lig title.

With just minutes left in the match, Fenerbahçe's Diego Lugano headbutted Galatasaray's Emre Aşık from behind, touching off a fracas that involved most players on the field.

Eventually, the hosts' Aşık and Arda Turan and Fenerbahçe's Lugano and Semih Şentürk received their marching orders for their involvement in the fighting.

The two sides' fans were also in combative mood, dismantling seats and trying to hurl them at each other.
