John Terry struck five minutes from time to lead England to a 2-1 home victory over Ukraine and stayed five points clear at the top of Group 6.

Wayne Rooney, who scored two goals in Saturday's 4-0 victory in a friendly against Slovakia, almost gave England an early lead as he tried a clever overhead kick which hit the roof of the net after a good approach play by Steven Gerrard.

England were under little pressure but were almost caught out by a 35-yard shot from Anatoliy Tymoschuk, which reared up awkwardly off the surface and hit David James as he dived to his left.

The home side went ahead in the 29th minute when Terry met Frank Lampard's corner with a firm header and Peter Crouch acrobatically volleyed home from six yards.

But the man who flopped at Chelsea, Andriy Shevchenko, equalised on 74 minutes when England failed to deal with a free-kick from the right and the ball bounced off Glen Johnson to Shevchenko, who lashed it home from 10 yards.

England looked like they would have to settle for a point before Terry got on the end of Gerrard's knockback to turn it in with his left foot and make it five wins out of five on the road to South Africa.
