Confederations Cup Final: Brazil fight back to claim title

Monday, June 29, 2009

Brazil produced a stunning second-half comeback to beat USA 3-2 and retain the Confederations Cup.

Having knocked out Spain in the semi-finals, USA looked set for another huge upset at Ellis Park in Johannesburg after taking a 2-0 lead into the half-time interval.

Fulham ace Clint Dempsey volleyed home the opener on 10 minutes before Landon Donovan finished off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th minute.

Brazil got back into the game within the opening 60 seconds of the second half when Luís Fabiano collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past Tim Howard.

Fabiano added a tournament-leading fifth to equalise on 74 minutes as he headed home from close range after Robinho's close-range effort came back off the bar.

Then Lúcio headed a dramatic winner six minutes from time to complete a stirring comeback by the Samba stars.
