Confederations Cup: Spain finish third

Monday, June 29, 2009

Xabi Alonso's extra-time winner helped Spain to see off South Africa 3-2 and clinch third place in the Confederations Cup.

South Africa looked to be heading for a shock win when substitute Katlego Mphela put the Bafana Bafana ahead after 73 minutes.

Dani Güiza came to the fore late on and the striker levelled matters on 88 minutes with a clinical finish inside the box.

Moments later, Spain went ahead as Güiza's attempted cross from the right deceived South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and clipped the upright before going into the net.

However, there was still more drama to come with Mphela sending the game into extra-time with a spectacular 25-yard free-kick which flew past Iker Casillas.

Spain grabbed the winner two minutes into the second period of extra-time when Alonso curled his free-kick through a crowd in the penalty area and inside the far post.

Lineups:

South Africa: Khune; Gaxa, Mokoena, Booth, Masilela; Pienaar (Mphela 64), Sibaya, Modise (Van Heerden 70); Dikgacoi, Parker, Tshabalala

Spain: Casillas; Arbeloa, Raul Albiol, Piqué, Capdevila; Cazorla, Busquets (Llorente 81), Xabi Alonso, Riera; David Villa (David Silva 57), Fernando Torres (Dani Güiza 57)
