World Cup qualifier: Four-star Brazil smash Uruguay

Sunday, June 7, 2009

Brazil claimed their first competitive win in Uruguay for 33 years with a comprehensive 4-0 win over the hosts.

Daniel Alves opened the scoring for the visitors in the 12th minute when his 30-yard speculative shot bounced past goalkeeper Sebastián Viera and into the net.

Viera was beaten again just before half-time when Juan placed his header into the back of the net after Elano played in a cross to the near post.

Luís Fabiano hammered home Brazil's third early in the second period before getting sent off for diving.

Kaká rounded the game off by earning and converting a penalty near the end.

Uruguay also finished the game with 10 men after Maximiliano Pereira saw red for a horrible challenge on Ramires.

Lineups:

Uruguay: Viera; Maximiliano Pereira, Godín, Cáceres, Valdez; Martínez, Pérez (Abreu 46) Eguren, Alvaro Pereira (Fernández 65); Suárez (Cavani 74), Forlán

Brazil: Júlio César; Daniel Alves, Lúcio, Juan, Kléber; Gilberto Silva, Felipe Melo; Elano (Ramires 65), Kaká (Júlio Baptista 85); Robinho (Josué 84), Luís Fabiano
