Claudio López scores a wonder goal against Beckham's Galaxy

Sunday, July 26, 2009

Kansas City Wizards forward Claudio López scored a wonder goal in David Beckham’s second league match since returning to the LA Galaxy.

El Piojo put Wizards ahead in the 26th minute when he caught Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts off his line and launched a looping shot from a yard shy of midfield.

Ricketts raced back and stretched for the ball, but it sailed over his fingertips before he crashed into the post, injuring his back. Josh Saunders replaced Ricketts in goal after the play.

The 51-yard shot was reminiscent of a 70-yarder Beckham struck in a 3-1 victory over Wizards on May 24, 2008. That goal, however, came with Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman pushed up the field as they looked for the equaliser.

López said that it was the best goal of his career, and Beckham, who has certainly seen his share of spectacular goals over his career, admitted he was impressed.

"Give credit to him, he’s a great player and it was a good goal by him," Beckham said after the match.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Landon Donovan scored the leveler seven minutes after López's goal.
