Rafa Benítez: Xabi should stay

Saturday, July 25, 2009

Liverpool boss Rafa Benítez has held talks with Xabi Alonso and has urged him to remain at Anfield, using fans’ admiration as an example of why he should stay.

At a training session on Friday ahead of Sunday's friendly against Singapore, fans waved banners and chanted for Alonso to remain with the Reds. A group of 21 fans lined up in the stands wearing shirts that spelled out, 'Xabi, please don't leave' in Spanish.

"I talked to Xabi yesterday and told him, as he can see here, that the fans love him and I said to him, 'maybe you have to stay," Benítez said on Saturday.

"You can see he is a really good player and I'll be really pleased if he stays. All the players and his team-mates want him to stay. If we keep Xabi I will be very pleased."

Alonso has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid with the playmaker admitting he is flattered to be linked with the Spanish giants.

He has been valued by Liverpool at around £35 million, but Los Merengues have reportedly offered less.
