Real Madrid demand more money from adidas

Saturday, July 4, 2009

Real Madrid are reportedly seeking a renegotiation of their contract with German sporting goods manufacturer adidas.

According to El Pais, Los Blancos supremo Florentino Pérez has asked adidas to double to €60 million the amount it pays the club annually.

It said a refusal by adidas, whose contract with the Spanish giants runs until 2012, could push Real to take its business to the company's US rival Nike.

Pérez is aware that following the arrivals of Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo, the club will have plenty of room to bargain.

"We are the best club in the world," Pérez had allegedly told adidas CEO Herbert Hainer in a telephone conversation.

El Pais has speculated that Pérez is now aiming for an yearly turnover of €500 million in order to cope with the huge salary demands of the latest batch of Galácticos.

"When we say we are the best team in the world," a senior official of the club is quoted as saying by El Pais. "We are sending the message to our sponsors that they have contracts to increase."
