Premier League: Wigan 0-5 Man United

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Defending champions Manchester United recovered from their Burnley blip by beating Wigan Athletic 5-0 at the DW Stadium.

Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock after half-time for his 100th United goal, via the most sublime of headers from Antonio Valencia's cross.

That was the cue for United to turn the screw and Dimitar Berbatov added a second two minutes later when he chipped the ball over Chris Kirkland before finding the net with his.

Rooney scored his second via a deflection off Mario Melchiot before his replacement Michael Owen made it 4-0 with a cool left-footed finish into the right corner.

Portuguese winger Nani then showed that Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kicks might not be missed as he curled home a set-piece in injury time.
