Soccer match abandoned after four minutes

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

A Bulgarian third division match was abandoned after just four minutes on Sunday as injuries left an already depleted team with only six players on the field.

Home side Gigant Belene started their match against Chavdar Byala Slatina with only eight players, arguing they were unable to field a full line-up due to a large number of injured and suspended players, Reuters reports.

But Gigant were quickly reduced to six after another two players sustained injuries, leaving referee Stoyan Denev no choice but to blow the "final" whistle.

According to the rules of the game, the match has to be halted if one of the teams has fewer than seven men on the pitch.

The visitors from Chavdar were awarded with a 3-0 victory and the match was declared the shortest in the history of football in Bulgaria.
