Real Madrid's title hopes suffered a setback after a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.
Bilbao could have been in front inside the first minute when Carlos Gurpegui's shot came back off the post and Gaizka Toquero hit the other post from the rebound.
But just two minutes later Bilbao were in front when Fernando Llorente was left unmarked in the six-yard box to head home his sixth goal of the season.
The home side finished with 10 men when Gurpegui was sent off for a second bookable in stoppage time, but there was no time for the capital club to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
