La Liga: Valencia 4-1 Villarreal

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Valencia closed the gap on second-placed Real Madrid to three points with an entertaining win over 10-man local rivals Villarreal at the Mestalla.

Éver Banega opened the scoring early on and David Villa doubled the lead from the penalty spot, with Kiko earning a red card for tugging on the striker's shirt when he was clean through.

David Silva made it three 11 minutes after the break, but the visitors were handed a glimmer of hope when Nilmar capitalised on a comical mix-up between Alexis and César Sánchez.

Valencia took that in their stride, though, and Villa made the game safe in the dying seconds by converting Silva's cross.
