Cristiano Ronaldo supports gay marriage in Portugal

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Soccer hearthtrob Cristiano Ronaldo says he is fully behind the impending introduction of gay marriage in his native Portugal.

Portugal will become the sixth country in Europe to legalise gay marriage on Saturday after its president approved legislation last month.

The Catholic country's parliament passed a bill allowing gay couples to wed in January and it was ratified by president Anibal Cavaco Silva on Wednesday.

"As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country," Ronaldo told Ipsilon.pt.

"We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities."

In 2006, the Real Madrid winger was named the pin-up boy of the World Cup by Dutch gay magazine Gay Krant.
