Ben Foster's penalty save from Morten Gamst Pedersen helped put Birmingham City on their way to a 2-1 home victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Blues keeper Foster denied Pedersen from the penalty spot with an outstanding save on 50 minutes after Nikola Žigić had tugged Chris Samba's shirt in the box.

But Blackburn finally took the lead as Steven N'Zonzi diverted home a near-post header from a Pedersen corner on 54 minutes.

Birmingham were not behind for long, though, and equalised on 57 minutes when a long ball from Stephen Carr found James McFadden in the area and his volleyed pass left Craig Gardner a simple tap-in.

The turnaround was complete on 71 minutes when former Aston Villa midfielder Gardner surged clear and cracked home the winner from 30 yards.
