Valencia needed a late equaliser from Aritz Aduriz to salvage a 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid at the Mestalla.
The visitors took the lead in the 18th minute when Simão latched onto Antonio López's pass before drilling a low shot past César Sánchez.
But Valencia equalised with seven minutes remaining as Aduriz climbed above Luis Perea to head David Albelda's cross into the corner of the net.
