Sunderland moved up to seventh in Premier League table after a controversial 2-0 win over Stoke City at the Stadium of Light.

Record signing Asamoah Gyan opened the scoring after nine minutes before Steed Malbranque saw his weak penalty saved by Asmir Begović.

Stoke thought they had levelled midway through the second half when Lee Cattermole cleared a Kenwyne Jones header behind his own goaline with his arm, but to the visitors' astonishment referee Martin Atkinson only awarded a corner.

Things got worse for Stoke when skipper Ryan Shawcross was sent-off for two quick-fire yellow cards seven minutes from time and Gyan swept home a second three minutes later.
