Tottenham Hotspur have now taken just two points from the last 12 Premier League games as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland.
The home side dominated possession and created a host of chances before Rafael van der Vaart gave them a deserved lead in the 64th minute.
But a defensive mix-up between William Gallas and Younes Kaboul three minutes later allowed Danny Welbeck's pass through to Asamoah Gyan, who slotted home beyond Gomes.
