Villarreal missed the chance to draw level on 48 points with third-placed Valencia after conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home to bottom club Málaga.
Marco Ruben put Villarreal ahead in the 36th minute when he turned home the rebound after Giuseppe Rossi's shot was half-stopped by Málaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
But Málaga drew level eight minutes from time as Sebastián Fernández finished off a counterattack led by José Rondón to split the points.
