Premier League: Sunderland 0-2 Liverpool

Monday, March 21, 2011

Liverpool are now just four points off fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a controversial 2-0 victory at Sunderland.

The divisive opener came 12 minutes before the break when referee Kevin Friend awarded Liverpool a spot-kick after John Mensah fouled Jay Spearing, but replays indicate the challenge occurred outside the area.

Dutchman Dirk Kuyt made no mistake in converting, sending Simon Mignolet the wrong way to give the visitors the lead

A wonderful solo effort from Luis Suárez in the 77th minute clinched the three points for Liverpool before Mensah was given a straight red card for hauling down Suárez as he chased a long punt upfield by goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
