The 34-year-old joined from Bayern Munich in January for the final six months of his contract and and has played a key role in helping the club win the Scudetto for the first time in seven years.

Several clubs around Europe are reportedly interested in the tough-tackling midfielder, but van Bommel insists he would choose staying at the San Siro over a move elsewhere.

Van Bommel told Calcio 2000: "I am very happy here, but it's not up to me. The decision is the club's to make.

"If they asked me to stay, then I could not say no to Milan.

"The atmosphere is exceptional here, as we all fight for the same objectives and put the team first ahead of personal interest.

"There are so many great champions and even those who are left on the bench cheer on their team-mates.

"I think a united locker room is crucial for success and Milan definitely have that."
