Altıntop, who was born in Germany but plays international football for Turkey, is out of contract at the end of the season and the 29-year-old does not want to sign a new contract with the club due to the lack of opportunities all season.

The midfielder has lost his place to the likes of Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben, who have been in great form all season, and is in search of club where he can play regular football.

"It is true that Real Madrid are interested in signing Hamit Altıntop," Rummenigge told Welt Online. "The Madrid board have informed us of their interest which they were not obliged to do.

"Hamit only started three games for us this season and that is not enough for him. We understand and respect his decision.

"He told us he did not want to extend his contract with Bayern."

Should the move materialise, Altıntop will join fellow Germany natives Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, and recent signing Nuri Şahin among the first-team ranks.
