Dyer fell awkwardly after going into a tackle and was taken off just five minutes into the 4-0 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers with rumours of a broken metatarsal.

But Hoops manager Neil Warnock has allayed fears that the 32-year-old had suffered serious injury.

He told Sky Sports News: "The good news is that we thought he had broken his metatarsal, it was nasty studs on the top of his foot challenge, but the X-rays are looking quite good.

"So we are just crossing our fingers really - we will know in the next 48 hours."

Warnock snapped up the injury-plagued midfielder after he was released by the relegated West Ham at the end of last season.

Dyer has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, managing only 15 league starts in four years at Upton Park.

This latest injury means that in his last 29 games, spread over three seasons, Dyer has only finished ninety minutes on one occasion.
