Premier League: Man United 2-3 Blackburn

Sunday, January 1, 2012

Manchester United missed the chance to overhaul Manchester City at the Premier League summit as they suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford.

The visiting side scored with their very first chance in the 16th minute when Yakubu coolly converted from the penalty spot after Dimitar Berbatov was penalised for pulling Chris Samba in the box.

The Nigerian striker then made it 2-0 early in the second period as he turned both Michael Carrick and Phil Jones before driving under David de Gea, only for Berbatov to reply straight from the kick-off.

And when the Bulgaria hitman restored in the 62nd minute parity with a smart finish from Antonio Valencia's pull-back, it looked as though there would only be one winner.

But de Gea's failure to deal with a routine corner ten minutes from time culminated in Grant Hanley bundling in the scruffiest of winners.
