David 'Calamity' James scores comical own goal

There was a time when David James' flapping and disastrous ability in the air led to him being called "Calamity" James. "Calamity" James was back last night.

In recent years, including his stint as England's number one, James did plenty to repair his reputation. But it was back to old tricks for the Bristol City goalkeeper in last night's defeat to Watford.

There appeared no threat to the home side's goal as Watford left-back Carl Dickinson launched the ball high towards City's penalty area from well inside his own half in the 15th minute.

But that quickly changed when James, electing to punch clear, inexplicably miss-judged the flight of the ball and watched in horror as it spun off the top of his glove and rolled gently into an unprotected net.

Bristol boss Derek McInnes is unlikely to have made James feel any better after the match, saying: "The first was a killer goal from our perspective because we had started brightly. A mistake like that is something you cannot anticipate and the game ran away from us."
