Simão's wondrous volley kept alive Beşiktaş' feint hopes of progressing into the Europa League quarterfinals, despite falling victim to a 3-1 defeat at Atlético Madrid.

The home side opened a seemingly unassailable three-goal lead by half-time thanks to a brace from Eduardo Salvio before Adrián López's remarkable solo effort.

Returning for the second half, Beşiktaş needed to find an early strike, and it came from former Rojiblancos favourite Simão.

After Atlético failed to clear a corner, the ball fell to Simão who curled it perfectly into the top corner and far out of Thibaut Courtois' reach.

And as he promised, Simão didn't celebrate his goal but his effort was welcomed with a warm feeling of nostalgia by the Vicente Calderón crowd.
