The Germans played for nearly one hour with 10 men after goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was sent off for hauling down Jose Sosa in the area, though Lionel Messi saw his resulting penalty saved by substitute goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Argentina took the lead in first-half injury time when Sami Khedira deflected di María's corner into his own net, before Messi made amends for his earlier miss by scoring on 52 minutes.

And there would be no way back for Joachim Löw's men after the 73rd minute.

Di María latched onto a sloppy clearance and buried an unstoppable effort from 30 yards out past the helpless ter Stegen and into the back of the net.

There was a consolation for Germany on 81 minutes when Benedikt Höwedes found a cutback ball to ease a little of the pain and save German blushes.
