Two epic misses cost Udinese Champions League spot

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Penalty shootout is like bejeweled slots, but Sporting Braga booked themselves a place in the Champions League group stages after a 5-4 shootout win at Udinese.

Pablo Armero gave the home side the lead on 25 minutes and the Colombian looked certain to double their advantage approaching the hour.

Racing through on goal in the inside-left channel, Armero somehow managed to completely miss his mark, fell over and very nearly landed with his face on the ball.

To make things worse, the 25-year-old then bizarrely attempted to swipe the ball into the back of the net with his hand.

Rúben Micael then equalised for Braga in the 70th minute to take the game to a penalty shootout where the embarrassment didn't stop for Udinese.

With the shootout locked at 2-2, Maicosuel stepped up and tried to attempt a "Panenka" and cheekily dink the ball down the middle of the goal.

However, unlike Andrea Pirlo in Euro 2012, Maicousuel was unable to outwit Braga goalkeeper Beto and timidly chipped the ball into the awaiting arms of the Portuguese stopper.
