After a goalless first half, Ludovic Sylvestre gave the away side the lead on the hour mark.

The Cottagers dominated possession but they came up against an organised Blackpool team who did well to frustrate throughout.

Martin Jol's men needed something special and that necessary moment of magic was provided by Karagounis with 10 minutes left.

Bryan Ruiz's corner was cleared only as far as the Greek on the edge of the area and Karagounis struck an irresistible looping volley past the hapless Matt Gilks.

"Out of nothing he scored," said relieved Jol afterwards.

"But, if you look at videos on the internet, he's probably done that eight or nine times before, and he's capable of doing that."

Blackpool manager Michael Appleton added: "It took a fantastic goal to get them back into the game."
