A fine header from Tom Taiwo gave the Edinburgh men a slender lead at the interval, but within minutes of the restart the game was turned on its head.

Michael Higdon drew the home side level just three minutes after the restart before a fine solo effort from veteran James McFadden put Motherwell in front on 54 minutes.

Stuart McCall's men then made it 3-1 with a goal of unbelievable quality after 68 minutes.

Stuart Carswell picked the ball up on the right side and found space to float a cross to the far side of the box.

The ball dropped in the air perfectly for Higginbotham to get his body in the right position to smash a sensational scissors kick into the corner of the net.

That wrapped up the points but Motherwell managed to add a fourth goal six minutes from time thanks to Tom Hateley's deflected effort from 20 yards.

"I'm just happy I pulled that goal out of the bag," Higginbotham told reporters.

"I try it all the time in training in small-sided games and the lads are always getting on my back.

"I was just lucky it paid off. As soon as I made contact I knew it was in.

"You try those things in training and, if the opportunity is there in games, you try to take it.

"I was just thankful it came off. I could try it another ten times and nine of them would go over the bar. But as soon as I hit it I knew it was in."
