Sunday, March 24, 2013

The United States beat Costa Rica 1-0 in their World Cup qualifier at Colorado on a snowy night more suitable to slaloms than football.

Plows and shovels were used to clear the penalty areas, center circle and midfield stripe as snow got heavier, and a yellow-and-purple ball was used.

Several inches of snow piled up as the game went on, even leading to a brief stoppage of play early in the second half to allow snow crews to clear the fields, while the ball often got lost in mounds of the stuff.

"I'm not sure how we managed to finish but it's credit to the ground staff for their work," USA captain and tha game's only goalscorer Clint Dempsey said after the match.

"It was difficult out here to see anything. The second half, the snow coming up past your ankles, it was almost unplayable."
