The hosts dominated from the start and opened the scoring after 25 minutes, albeit in comical fashion.

Jonathan Schmid's lofted cross looked as if it would be gathered by Hannover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, but the flight of the ball deceived him.

The ball flew over Zieler and struck the unsuspecting Schulz, bounced off his foot before trickling agonizingly into the back of the empty net.

Konstantin Rausch brought Hannover level shortly afterwards, but goals from Max Kruse and Schmid late in the game earned Freiburg the points.

"Yeah, of course I had hoped that Ron would gather the ball," the unfortunate Schulz said after the game.

"When I realised he hadn't done so, I had two options in my head and I sort of got stuck in between the two.

"At first I wanted to avoid conceding a corner. Then I thought there was another way to solve it and then the ball was in the goal.

"It was really annoying for both me personally and the team."
