Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking, facing his former club for the first time since leaving them in December, saw his side establish a two-goal lead within half an hour through superb strikes from Diego and Ivica Olić.

But Nürnberg mounted a spirited comeback and they were rewarded in the 61st minute when Simons pulled one back with a stunning volley.

The Belgian met a poor clearance out of defense on the run and, without breaking stride, unleashed a dipping, outswinging volley from 25 yards which left Diego Benaglio no chance in the Wolfsburg goal.

It was Simons' fourth goal of the season, making him the club's joint top goalscorer alongside Markus Feulner, Hiroshi Kiyotake and Sebastian Polter.

Per Nilsson then equalized five minutes later to take a share of the spoils.

"I caught the ball perfectly - which I was surprised at," Simons told Sky Sports after match.
