Things began well for Rennes when Jonathan Pitroipa fired them in front on the half-hour mark before Maor Melikson leveled the scores soon after.

But the evening quickly went downhill for the visitors when Dimitri Foulquier was given his marching orders for a second yellow card on the hour mark and his teammate John Boye followed him soon for a straight red card.

Two men up, Valenciennes took advantage of their numerical superiority and regained their lead in the 68th minute when Lindsay Rose headed in a Gaël Danic corner.

The hosts virtually wrapped up the win and the three points seven minutes from full time through a beauty from Lala.

Lala picked the ball from Mathieu Dossevi on the right side of the Rennes box and cleverly lifted the ball over Benoît Costil with his left foot.

Substitute José Saez wrapped up an emphatic win with a goal at the death.
