Bastia midfielder Ludovic Genest scored his first top-flight goal in style but the Turchini lost 2-1 to Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Having seen their remarkable 11-game streak of clean sheets ended by Bordeaux last weekend, Lille would have been at least hoping to keep their opponents at bay on Sunday.
But those ambitions were soon ended as the hosts fell behind to Genest's stunning third-minute opener.
Bringing the ball down on his chest some 25 yards from goal, Genest sent a volley dipping over an off-guard Vincent Enyeama to open his account in spectacular style.
Genest had never struck in the top-flight, and the 26-year-old will long remember his maiden effort that found the net.
However, Lille refused to buckle and took an important stride towards their 12th win in 18 matches when Salomon Kalou scored twice in five minutes.
